What to Look for in Structural Firefighting Gloves

Structural firefighting gloves aren't all created equal. NFPA 1970 sets minimum requirements for floor-flame resistance, conductive-heat protection, liquid-penetration resistance, cut-and-puncture protection, and bloodborne-pathogen barrier performance, but what separates a good glove from a great one plays out on the fireground, not in a lab.

Thermal Protective Performance (TPP)

NFPA 1970 requires a minimum TPP rating of 35. Some gloves in this collection exceed that significantly; for example, the Dex-Pro delivers a TPP of 60+, nearly four times the required minimum. If your department handles high-volume structural work or operates in large commercial buildings, a higher TPP is worth the investment.

Dexterity and Feel

Gloves that compromise dexterity get left on the rig. If your crew can't operate a radio, tie a hose, or hit a Mayday button with their gloves on, those gloves create a hazard of their own. Look for 3D-cut finger construction, Nomex® or Kevlar® sidewalls, and a design that breaks in quickly.
