The Hydrant Flushing Elbow is designed for efficient and effective hydrant flushing. Available in multiple sizes, this elbow features a National Standard Thread (NST) female connection, ensuring compatibility with standard hydrants. Made from durable aluminum, it offers both strength and lightweight handling. The 360-degree rotation capability allows for flexible positioning, making it easier to direct water flow as needed.
Features
- 360° Rotation: Rotating female swivel enables precise aiming of the discharge to protect roadways and landscaping during flushing.
- NST (NH) Female Thread: Interfaces with standard U.S. hydrant outlets; NH (NST) is the predominant fire‑service thread standard for hydrants and hoses.
- Multiple Hydrant Sizes: Available in 2.50", 4.00", and 4.50" NST female to match common side and steamer outlets.
- Aluminum Construction: Lightweight and corrosion‑resistant for easier handling and durable service in the field.
What is it?
A hydrant flushing elbow is a swiveling discharge elbow that threads onto a hydrant outlet to redirect, control, and aim the flushing stream. It supports safe, targeted water release during routine maintenance or water‑quality operation
How is it used?
- Select the elbow size that matches the hydrant outlet (2.50", 4.00", or 4.50").
- Thread the female NST (NH) swivel onto the hydrant outlet and tighten with a hydrant wrench.
- Rotate the elbow to aim flow downward or toward a designated safe area to minimize roadway splash, soil erosion, and property impact.
- Use during conventional or unidirectional flushing to remove sediment, reduce water age, and help restore disinfectant residuals.
- When finished, close the hydrant slowly, confirm pressure bleed‑off, then remove and stow the elbow.
Who uses it?
- Fire Departments and First Responders for hydrant maintenance, flushing, and controlled discharge operations.
- Water Utilities and Public Works as part of scheduled or targeted distribution‑system flushing programs to maintain water quality and system reliability.
Maintenance information
- Inspect the swivel action and gasket condition before each use; confirm smooth 360° rotation and leak‑free seating.
- After use, rinse the elbow with clean water and allow it to dry.
- Check thread faces for debris or abrasion; replace worn gaskets to maintain a positive seal.
- Store in a dry compartment to prevent contamination and abrasion.
What is it used with?
- Hydrants featuring 2.50" side outlets and 4.50" steamer outlets; some systems also use 4.00" outlets.
- Optional accessories during flushing and testing: hydrant gate valves, flow‑test diffusers, meters, and pressure gauges.
What material is it made from?
- Aluminum body and components. Aluminum provides a strong strength‑to‑weight ratio and corrosion resistance suitable for field operations
