What is it?

The DuraChem® 500 is a vapor‑tight, non‑encapsulating Hazmat/CBRN protective ensemble coverall designed for first responders operating in hazardous materials and terrorism response environments.

How is it used?

The suit is worn as a primary chemical and biological protective garment during hazmat and CBRN response operations. It integrates with respiratory protection through a Sure‑Fit® face seal and is secured using a gas‑tight zipper system to help reduce vapor intrusion.

Who uses it?

The DuraChem® 500 is intended for first responders involved in hazardous materials response and CBRN operations, including teams responding to general hazmat incidents and terrorism‑related events.

What is it used with?

The suit is used in conjunction with compatible respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment as determined by departmental procedures and incident requirements. Respiratory equipment is not included with the suit.

Maintenance Information

The DuraChem® 500 is designed as a multi‑use, single‑exposure garment. It may be laundered up to five times if not contaminated. Inspection, cleaning, and continued use should follow agency protocols and exposure conditions.

Cleaning Instructions – DuraChem® 500 Garments

  • Only garments that have been completely cleaned and fully dried should be considered for continued use.
  • Garments exposed to toxic chemicals or blood/body fluids (other than perspiration from the wearer) must not be reused.
  • Launder separately from non‑flame‑resistant garments.
  • Close all zippers, buckles, and fasteners before washing.
  • Use a front‑loading washer or a washer without an agitator to minimize mechanical wear.
  • If a top‑loading washer is used, select the gentlest available wash cycle.
  • Wash using cold water only (below 105°F) with a low‑sudsing detergent.
  • Do not use fabric softeners, bleach, stain removers, or other laundry additives.
  • Do not scrub, scrape, or abrade the fabric, as this may reduce chemical barrier performance.
  • Air dry only; do not use heated air or tumble dryers.
  • Do not dry clean the garment.
  • Record each wash cycle in the garment inspection or maintenance log.
  • When cleaned using these guidelines, garments may be washed up to five times without compromising chemical barrier or flammability resistance.

Additional Important Information

  • Designed as a Non‑Encapsulating Suit: The DuraChem® 500 is a vapor‑tight, non‑encapsulating garment. Respiratory protection is worn outside the suit and must be selected separately according to agency protocols.
  • Single‑Exposure Intent: The garment is designed for multi‑use, single‑exposure applications. Continued service life depends on proper inspection, cleaning, and confirmation that no contamination is present.
  • Gas‑Tight Performance Depends on Fit and Closure: Proper sizing, full zipper closure, and correct sealing around the respirator facepiece are critical to achieving the intended vapor‑tight performance.
  • Independent Laboratory Testing: Chemical resistance data is based on laboratory testing of material samples, not complete garments, and results may vary depending on exposure conditions, concentration, temperature, and duration.
  • PFAS‑Free Fabric: The DuraChem® 500 fabric does not contain PFAS chemistry, which may be important for agencies with PFAS‑reduction initiatives or procurement policies.
  • Tactical Mobility Consideration: The non‑encapsulating design allows for improved mobility and dexterity compared to fully encapsulating suits, making it suitable for tactical hazmat and CBRN response operations.
  • Rear‑Entry vs. Front‑Entry Selection: Available in both front‑entry and rear‑entry configurations, allowing agencies to choose based on donning, doffing, and contamination‑control preferences.
  • Helmet and Equipment Compatibility: Designed for exterior helmet wearability, supporting use with tactical helmets and field equipment commonly employed by first responders.
  • Training Recommended: Personnel should be trained in donning, doffing, inspection, and limitations of non‑encapsulating vapor‑tight suits prior to operational use.
  • Documentation and Tracking: Cleaning cycles, inspections, and usage history should be documented to support serviceability decisions and PPE accountability programs.
  • Not a Complete PPE System: The DuraChem® 500 is one component of a broader protective ensemble. Additional protective equipment selection is determined by agency policy and incident conditions.
