Using the Handheld Pitot correctly is essential for obtaining accurate readings. Here are the steps:
- Positioning: Stand on the right-hand side of the water stream with the pitot in your right hand, and your right thumb above the air/water bleed button. Hook three fingers of your left hand over the handle of the pitot between the pitot blade and gauge.
- Inserting the Blade: As you insert the blade into the water stream, use extreme caution as the pitot will kick back. It takes practice to hold the tip of the blade in the center of the water stream. Steady the Handheld Pitot to prevent the force of the water from affecting the reading.
- Bleeding Air: After obtaining a secure grasp of the pitot tube, press the air/water bleed button with your thumb as the pitot tube is being placed in the water stream. This removes all air from the static pressure circuit of the pitot. The liquid-filled gauge minimizes needle fluctuation.
- Reading and Recording: Place the pitot blade tip opening in the center of the water stream, held away from the hydrant outlet or nozzle tip, approximately one-half the diameter of the opening (e.g., for a 2-1/2 inch outlet, the distance would be 1-1/4 inches). Read the pressure gauge and record the pressure reading. Refer to the attached table for gallons per minute (GPM) or flow in kPa.
- Post-Test: After the test is complete, press the air/water bleed button to allow all water to drain before storing the handheld pitot in its case.
