What is it?

This is a certified calibration gas mixture of 100 parts per million isobutylene in air packaged in a portable, non‑refillable 34‑liter steel cylinder with a CGA‑600 valve. It’s used to perform span calibrations and bump checks on photoionization detectors (PIDs) and other instruments that use isobutylene as the reference gas.

How is it used?

  1. Attach a compatible CGA‑600 regulator (fixed‑flow, demand‑flow, or control valve) to the cylinder.
  2. Connect the regulator outlet to the instrument’s calibration port or sampling line.
  3. Flow the gas at the instrument‑specified rate and complete the span or bump procedure per the detector manufacturer’s instructions (PIDs are commonly calibrated to isobutylene and then corrected with response factors as needed).

Why isobutylene?

It’s the de‑facto PID calibration standard because it’s widely available, relatively stable, and VOC response factors for many compounds are referenced to isobutylen

Who uses it?

  • First Responders and HAZMAT teams calibrating PIDs on gas meters used for spill response, unknown‑VOC screening, and hot‑zone entry
  • Fire departments, industrial safety, and environmental contractors performing routine instrument QA/QC.

Maintenance information

  • Storage & handling: Keep cylinders upright, secured, and away from heat/sunlight; store in a well‑ventilated area. (Compressed gas; may explode if heated.) Follow the Safety Data Sheet.
  • Instrument considerations: Humidity and target‑gas differences can affect PID readings; use appropriate correction factors or (ideally) calibrate in conditions close to use.
  • Shelf life & certification: Distributors provide NIST‑traceable certification and ±5% accuracy for this mixture; check the cylinder’s Certificate of Analysis and expiration date before use.

What is it used with?

  • Regulators (CGA‑600): Gasco 71‑series fixed‑flow, 72‑MFV miniflow, CV‑2 control valve, Dial‑A‑Flow, and related models for 17 L & 34 L steel cylinders.
  • Instruments: Photoionization detectors and multi‑gas detectors that accept isobutylene span gas (e.g., instruments described by RAE/Honeywell, Blackline, Industrial Scientific). Always verify with your device manual.

What material is it made from?

  • Cylinder: Steel (non‑refillable 34 L “34LS” format for non‑reactive gas mixtures).
  • Gas mixture: Isobutylene (100 ppm) in air (oxygen + nitrogen
