Electric vehicles present unique challenges for firefighters during emergencies. These vehicles' batteries are challenging to access and even harder to cool down, as the energy generated during thermal runaway can lead to re-ignition or the spread of fire from cell to cell. To combat these challenges, Ziamatic has developed Vehicle Cooling Units that aid firefighters in safely handling electric vehicle fires.

Features

  • Spray Hole Design: 1/16” diameter holes deliver fine mist for efficient cooling
  • Coverage Area: VCU-36 covers 4' x 8'; VCU-72 covers 7' x 8' at 5.5” ground clearance
  • Spray Pattern: 140-degree spray angle ensures wide, even distribution
  • Ground Clearance Compatibility: Slides under vehicles with as little as 5.5” clearance
  • Water Efficiency: VCU-36 uses only 40–60 GPM; VCU-72 uses 84–119 GPM
  • Connection Type: Includes NHT 1.5 double female swivel coupling for standard fire hose compatibility
  • Modular Design: VCU-72 includes quick disconnect fittings for easy setup and breakdown
  • Durable Construction: Made from welded aluminum and stainless steel for long-lasting performance
  • Low Maintenance: Easy to clean and store; designed for repeated field use
  • Firefighter-Approved: Engineered specifically for electric vehicle fire suppression scenarios

What is it?

Ziamatic Vehicle Cooling Units (VCUs) are specialized firefighting tools designed to address the unique challenges of electric vehicle fires. These units deliver targeted water spray beneath vehicles to cool battery compartments and prevent thermal runaway, a common hazard in EV fires. Available in two sizes—VCU-36 and VCU-72—they offer efficient, low-flow cooling solutions for emergency responders.

How is it used?

VCUs are connected to standard fire hoses using a NHT 1.5 double female coupling (included). Once connected, the unit is slid under the vehicle, where it delivers a wide-angle spray pattern to cool the underside and battery compartment. The system operates with as little as 40 gallons per minute and can be left in place to continue cooling while crews perform other tasks.

Who uses it?

Fire departments, emergency response teams, hazmat units, and municipal agencies use VCUs to manage electric vehicle fires. These units are especially valuable for departments responding to EV incidents in urban, highway, or industrial settings.

Maintenance information

VCUs require minimal maintenance. After use, discharge the water line, allow pressure to dissipate, and drain the unit completely. Inspect spray holes for debris and clean with water if needed. Store in a dry compartment and avoid exceeding 100 PSI at the connection point.

What is it used with?

VCUs are used with standard 1.5” fire hoses, SCBA gear, and other firefighting equipment. They integrate seamlessly into existing suppression systems and can be deployed alongside foam or water-based extinguishing agents.

Material

VCUs are constructed from durable welded aluminum and stainless-steel components. The spray holes are precision-drilled for consistent performance, and the couplings are made from high-grade brass or stainless steel for corrosion resistance.
